Alouettes Maul Blue Bombers To Remain Atop CFL Standings

By Ross Everett

The Montreal Alouettes demonstrated the form that has made them the CFLs top team in a Saturday visit to Winnipeg. Anthony Calvillo threw four touchdown passes and the tenacious Montreal defense all but shut down the Winnipeg offense as the Alouettes prevailed easily over the Blue Bombers by a 39-12 score. The Alouettes improved to 6-1 in CFL play, while the Bombers dropped to 2-5.

CFL bettors who backed Montreal cashed their tickets as the Als easily covered as -8 road favorites. Montreal improved to 5-2 against the number while the Blue Bombers slipped to 4-3 against the spread. The combined 51 points scored exceeded the posted total of 47, leaving each team with a 4-3 edge to the OVER this season.

Calvillo not only through four TD passes, he through three consecutive passes for touchdowns which is a feat that he cant recall accomplishing before:

"Somebody mentioned that to me out there. I didn't realize that and they asked me if it's ever been done or if I'd done it before and I can't recall."

After the game, Calvillo gave all of the credit for the victory to the defense and insisted that his team had a lot of work to do:

"Our defence put us on the short field throughout the night and we capitalized on the turnovers. We have a lot of work to do. We had a few dropped passes, a few misreads by myself and two turnovers. We're always looking to improve and we definitely have to improve on offence."

Kerry Watkins caught one of Calvillos touchdowns and spoke of the effort and his pleasure in playing with the CFL legend in his postgame interview:

"It's a great accomplishment, but something we don't keep track of. It's an honour. That's a living legend. I've been so fortunate to play my whole (six-year) career with him."

Bombers head coach Mike Kelly, who also serves as the teams offensive coordinator, suggested that there was nothing wrong with the offensive tactics:

"There's nothing wrong with this scheme. I've seen this scheme work 1,000 times .If you want to get right down to it, we have to block when we need to block and catch when we need to catch and throw to the right people. And right now we're not doing those things so we'll continue to look at it."

Winnipeg defensive tackle Doug Brown agreed with his coachs assessment:

"Let's put it this way, we were in a good enough dogfight without as many critical errors as we made ourselves. You play a team of this calibre, the last thing you need to do is dig yourself your own hole with penalties and turnovers and missed tackles and not executing our assignments and so on and so forth."

Montreal will host Saskatchewan on Friday, while Winnipeg will head west for a game against British Columbia.

Jags Need Overtime To Stop Winless Rams

By Ross Everett

Despite dominating the winless St. Louis Ram on the stat sheet, the Jacksonville Jaguars needed overtime to eke out a 23-20 home field victory over arguably the worst team in the NFL. Based on their statistical superiority, the Jags should have made mincemeat out of the hapless Rams-they had 33 first downs to 13 for St. Louis, held a 492-262 overall yardage edge and had possession of the ball for 42:12 compared to 24:48 for the Rams. They did have three turnovers to only one for St. Louis, including an interception that was returned for a touchdown.

Those who bet on NFL football would argue, however, that while Jacksonville may have 'won the battle' the Rams won the financial 'war' as St. Louis easily covered as +9' road underdogs. It was only the Rams second NFL pointspread cover of the season (2-4 ATS) while Jacksonville evened their record against the money at 3-3. The 43 points put on the board just managed to go OVER the posted total of 42. Jacksonville has now gone OVER in four of six games, while St. Louis evened their NFL totals record at 3-3.

The catalyst behind the Jags offense was running back Marcus Jones-Drew who churned out 133 yards and three touchdowns. He'd gone public the week before saying that the Jags needed to run more and he explained the motives behind the comments after the game:

"I just wanted to show people my frustration of losing/ I feel we are on the verge of being great, but we just have to feel the same way about frustration. I lashed out a little bit. I think I went overboard, but the coaches understood after I talked to them and told them what it was about."

Jags' QB David Garrard said that the win was a confidence boost:

"This offense can battle even when the situation looks kind of bleak. To have that composure, that poise ... that was huge for us. That was a good test for us to be able to move forward."

There was immediate second guessing of Rams' coach Steve Spagnuolo's decision to go for the tie with the team had the ball on the nine yard line with seven seconds remaining. Some suggested that a team with a 0-6 mark should have gone for the win at this point. Spagnuolo responded all but saying that this team wasn't playing to win but 'playing not to lose':

"It was too close. We never wanted something bad to happen and we just couldn't take the chance. I think it was the right thing to do."

The Rams won't have an easy task earning their first victory next weekend as they host the Indianapolis Colts. The Rams are a +13 home underdog with the total set at 45'. Jacksonville will now have a bye week before returning to action on the road against the Tennessee Titans on November 1st.

Patriots Back On Winning Track With Win Over Falcons

By Ross Everett

After an erratic start to the 2009 NFL regular season, the New England Patriots have finally found some balance to their offense. Tom Brady had carried all of the weight in the Pats first two regular season games due to their one dimensional offense, but on Sunday he received some long overdue help from running back Fred Taylor who ran for 105 yards. As a result, the Patriots dominated the time of possession battle holding onto the ball for nearly 40 minutes en route to a 26-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Both teams are now 2-1 on the season.

NFL betting enthusiasts who backed the Patriots as -4 home favorites cashed their tickets with the 16 point victory. It was New England's first ATS triumph of the season, while Atlanta lost to the money for the first time in the 2009 campaign. The 36 combined points scored went UNDER the total of 45.

Running back Taylor talked about the importance of a balanced offense in his postgame interview:

"You want to be balanced going into games, but some situations don't allow for it. You want to establish that momentum and look over across the ball and see the frustration in the defensive guys' eyes."

New England was also very effective on defense, holding the Falcons Tony Gonzalez to one catch early in the fourth quarter. Afterwards, Gonzalez talked about the Patriots defensive scheme:

"They did the same thing they always do to me, 'bracket coverage. If I get single coverage I am going to make them pay for it eventually."

New England safety Brandon McGowan joked that the plan was to hold Gonzalez without any catches:

"The plan was for him to not have any catches and he had one so obviously the plan failed."

Patriots running back Sammy Morris said it was simply a matter of making plays:

"We were making plays in the second half we weren't making in the previous weeks. It was directly related to making the third-and-shorts and fourth-and-shorts. The offense is able to stay on the field and you're able to get more things accomplished."

The Falcons will enjoy a bye weekend before returning to action on the road against the San Francisco 49ers on October 11th. Theyll host the Chicago Bears the following Sunday before playing the Cowboys at Dallas. New England will host the Baltimore Ravens, with the Patriots a -1 home favorite. The total in the game has been set at 44. New England will play at Denver the following weekend before returning home to take on the Tennessee Titans.

Golf Tips For a Better Game

By Emma Jackson

For a quick learner golf can be a lot of fun. The key to learn the basic tricks of the game is to know the accurate moves in the beginner's stage. Now we will share with you the basic tips that will make learning and playing golf a more fun experience and a good exercise.

The first one is to create a basic balance between distance and accuracy of the shot. As the distance of the ball from the cup increases, the shot becomes tougher and it gets more difficult to get the ball in to the hole. So common sense tells us that beginners should start with smaller swings. If you try to learn full swing before you actually master the short swings, then you deliberately make it more difficult for yourself. Once you learn the right amount of strength and movement required for accuracy, it will become much easier to hit full swings across more distance.

The grip on the club makes a vital difference in improving your game. The hold should be with the fingers and not the palm. For right-handers, one should use the left hand to make the grip while putting very little pressure on the right hand. The index finger and thumb are free while the pressure is channeled by the last three fingers. For firm putting firm grip holds the key.

When striving for full swing, the focus should be on one swing take away. Club should be moved back slowly at a lower level. The motion to the top of the backswing must be lazy and slow to build a powerful tempo. Extend you arms and move shoulders along with hands and arms for a complete swing that leads to a powerful shot. Your elbows must be firmly together throughout the swing.

The correct equipment is central in playing good sport of golf. Faulty equipment would not work in favor of the golfer and he cannot enjoy the game and would lose focus. Each club has a peculiar purpose. The handle of the club must be matched with the golfer's height. The correct ball selection makes the work of a new golfer much less tedious. The dynamics of the game of golf are greatly improved with the right equipment, conditions and weather.

Last but not the least practice is the essential feature for any skill. Practice with varying strength and swing. Spend time with different ball flights. Play high and low, far and close, left and right. You must know what kind of stroke will land the ball where you want it to be. You need to practice various routines with all the clubs for a perfect flawless game.

3 Tips for Being a Great Hitter in Baseball

By Gordon Berman

If you desire to be a greater hitter, you have to practice a lot and also have a strategy. All the best hitters learn to make changes in their stance and swing until they get the results they want. In the following article, we will talk about some the things that will help you to improve your baseball hitting.

When it comes to baseball hitting, plenty of baseball players make the error of hitting too hard and not hard enough. They are so focused on hitting the ball hard that they tense up and end up missing, or hitting the ball ineffectively. If you aren't tense and have a looser swing, you will possess more control and power. The best hitters know that the most important thing is to make contact with the ball, and they don't worry about how far it's going to go. In many cases, you can help your team with a walk, a bunt or a base hit.

When you step up to the plate, your main enemy is the pitcher who will do just about anything to deter your ability to hit the ball. Statistically, pitchers usually win the duel with the batter, as even the best hitters get on base less than half the time. For these reasons, if you want to be a better hitter, it will help you to learn about pitching. No, you do not have to pitch balls, but just watch some examples and know different strategies. Determine the type of pitches that give you the most difficulty and use them for improvement.

One way you can get better at hitting is to get a batting coach. Being a member of the team means you will get team advice from the coach, but there is nothing like getting individual attention and tips. You may not require a lot of sessions, but a good coach can make you see the ways that you can improve just by watching you and letting you know what he sees. Look for a qualified batting coach in your area, as this can make a big difference in your development as a hitter.

When you want to improve your hitting skills, you have to be determined to figure out what areas you need improvements in and then practice until you see results. You have to have an open mind for changes, so if you coach gives you a tip, you must listen to see if it will help you. The above tips will help you to be a better hitter, but only you can make it a possibility.
